SHEPARD STUDENT TO PERFORM AT CARNEGIE HALL
SHAW STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
DURHAM, NC - Shepard Middle School seventh-grader Jazmine Warren has been
accepted into the Honors Performance Series Honors Band at Carnegie Hall.
Jazmine sent her recorded audition to a panel of judges in New York City, who
selected her to perform with outstanding middle school band students from across
the nation. Jazmine will rehearse under the direction of renowned conductors
Jeffrey Grogan, Kirt Mosier and Jeffrey L. Ames. The Honors Band will perform on
Saturday, June 28.
RALEIGH, NC - Thirteen Shaw University student leaders attended the National Black Student
Leadership Conference, hosted by the William Leadership Education Foundation from January 10
-12 at the Crabtree Valley Marriott in Raleigh, NC. The conference theme “Building a Legacy of
Leadership” focused on teaching students how to identify effective leadership skills, developing
a leadership work plan and promoting the exchange of ideas and experiences to take back to
campus.
Featuring Emmy-nominated actress Victoria Rowell, Diversity Educator Steve Birdine and
Reverend Derwin L. Montgomery as the keynote speakers, students attended a variety of sessions
at the conference including “Can You Afford to Be a Leader?”, “Blacks in Leadership,” and “The
Activism Imperative in Student Leadership.”
Shaw students were able to attend the conference through a grant from the North Carolina
Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). The grant was written by Dr. Carmen Walker,
Director of First-Year Programs and Dr. Stanley Elliott, Director of CAPEs served as the principal
investigator (PI) for the grant. The following students attended the conference and were selected
by Ebony Johnson, Director of Student Activities & Greek Life: William Askew, Cambrea Borders,
Matthew Coleman, Athena Curry, Destini Dixon, Farran Jackson, Majigg Jones,Dominique Lewis,
Brandon Moyer, Breonna Maynard, Bryan Speight, Avery Upshur, and Jamel Walker. In addition, Dr.
Elliott also presented at the conference.
