SUSTAINABILITY reduction in environmental impact, 92 % lower GHG emissions, 95 % lower eutrophication and acidification of water and 90 % lower consumption of non-renewable energy compared to benchmark products.
Similarly, Lubrizol’ s Lectroglaze biotech ingredient claims to achieve 59 % lower CO 2 emissions thanks to a facultative anaerobic manufacturing process, as well as a feedstock with a 55 % lower carbon footprint compared to wheat sugars, no use of solvents and 99 % natural origins. It is used to harness the skin’ s microbiome to reduce bioelectricity levels and thus enhance skincare products.
The Sustainability Zone also featured company initiatives to improve their sustainability. Some of these, like man of the products, have achieved certification by Cosmos, Ecovadis and others. Among them were:
• Ashland, which has aligned itself to the Science-Based Target Initiative( SBTi) to keep Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions within the 1.5 ° C target, as well as its multi-country Arbor Day initiative
• Croda’ s newly launched Beauty of Zero, aiming to achieve Net Zero across its portfolio
• Evonik’ s BioCircuit initiative to enhance biodiversity by using natural actives from plant selection to active development
• Symrises’ s Essence of Carbon initiative to drive sustainability by decarbonisation, supported by an AI-assisted platform
• AAK’ s Kolo Nafaso project for shea kernels in West Africa, the first sourcing programme to be FairWild-certified for sustainable cultivation of wild collection and processing
Anyone for coffee?
Syensqo had two products in the Sustainability Zone: Naternal Care XTRA( INCI: Trigonella Foenum- Graecum Hydroxypropyltrimonium) Chloride), the first biodegradable conditioning polymer based on fenugreek; and Miracare OPR 2( INCI: Aqua( and) Cocamidoethyl Betaine( and) Glycol Distearate( and) Sodium Benzoate, a biobased, biodegradable concentrate that is said to impart“ a bright, creamy, milky appearance, enhancing the whiteness and visual appeal of formulations”.
The company launched its Sustainable Guar Initiative in India ten years ago and Naternal is the biodegradable version of the longestablished Jaguar line.
“ Sustainability and biodegradability are things we have been working on over the past five or six years, to develop future-proof technologies which are readily biodegradable, nonecotoxic and non-persistent,” said Dr Vincent Miralles, global marketing director for hair care.
Recent years have seen the increasing‘ skinification’ of hair care, with skin care actives using in hair and products increasingly targeting the scalp. In this context, Syensqo used In-Cosmetics to launch Re2( the name stands for‘ Reused and recycled’) Coffea Arabica Peptide, a soothing, anti-hair-loss scalp care active that is extracted from post-consumer coffee grounds sourced in China.
This ingredient uses proprietary molecular docking technology to selectively extract targeted peptide fragments that are claimed to help soothe the scalp, boost hydration, reinforce barrier function and reduce hair loss by over 80 %. AI is used to select the amino acid sequences that down-regulate the scalp biomarkers for sensitivity and inflammation, then enzymes detach and cut them, increasing the product’ s potency. Applications are envisaged in shampoos and serums.
