Bill Stevens returning to fest
for good old-fashioned fun
Musical show
set both days
in bakery tent
Bill Stevens here.
Years ago when I was
just a small boy (was I really ever small?) we used
to gather in my grandparents’ kitchen after a good
home-cooked meal.
All of us kids would
run and get our pajamas
on and Grandma would
put pillows all around the
kitchen floor for us to sit
on. Grandma, Grandpa
and Mom would sit on
chairs at one end of the
kitchen and we would all
snuggle up to Dad with
our pillows under us at
the other end.
Gramps played mandolin, Grandma a washboard using her sewing
thimbles and Mom had a
pair of wooden spoons.
The three of them sang
and played for us. This
was the best of times and
I was dazzled by the
music they made.
Just when I thought it
couldn’t get any better,
Grandma’s timer bell
would go off and she
would stop playing long
enough to pull freshbaked cookies and fruit
turnovers out of the oven.
The rest of us would savor
our treats while those
good old melodies danced
in our heads. As we grew
older, other things took
over our “after dinner
time.”
I never thought that I
would ever feel that way
again until we started
playing in the bakery tent
at Cranberry Fest. We’ve
gotten to meet so many
people and their families
who gather in the bakery
tent each year as we roll
out those toe-tapper songs
and eat some of the best
baked goods in the world.
Music, stories, friendly
folks and powerful good
food and drink — can’t get
much better than that!
Saxophone wizard Bonnie FrancisStevens and percussionist Connie Kinat-
This year I’m joined
again by saxophone wizard
Bonnie
FrancisStevens. She has added
the tenor and soprano sax
along with the sweet alto
sax she’s always played.
Our percussionist, Connie
Kinateder (Bonnie’s twin),
will join us as well.
We have such a fun
time playing our music all
day Saturday and Sunday,
come rain or shine — or
even snow! We’re looking
forward to seeing all our
friends and meeting new
ones as well. The event is
co-sponsored by River Valley Bank and the Eagle
River Area Chamber of
Commerce and Visitors’
Center.
So take time to check
out the bakery tent, enjoy
a pastry with some of the
best coffee you’ve ever
had, and then join us for
some music and good
times. Maybe we can show
you how much fun that
old farm kitchen really
was!
