Tami Lewis is a stay at home mother of two, Samantha age 6 and Andrew who is 17 months old and was diagnosed with Down syndrome soon after birth.

The diagnosis was a reality that Tami was not prepared for. “My world came crashing down. We had no idea he had Down syndrome before he was born and it was hard to take in at first.” She recalls.

Andrew spent a week in the hospital with pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension, as well as having a hole in his heart. It wasn’t until he was four months old that doctors were able to finally take him off his oxygen. Shortly after that he had to have throat surgery to help with his breathing.

In his first year of life, Andrew endured 18 hospitalizations. He has had anything from a cold to pneumonia, influenza B, influenza type 1, croup and a number of other things. Tami says, “He has been through a lot in his short life so far, but he continues to inspire me every day with his smile and just the way he is.”
