to help her out with her plans.They even got some officials of the ghetto on their side. When Irena was discovered and arrested by the Gestapo, these people got her out of prison. After this, she stored all the slips of paper with the smuggled childrens’ names in a jar. She reunited as many families as she could and hoped to tell the rest of the children when they were older.

Irena Sendler and her friends managed to save more than 2500 Jewish children over the course of one year! After World War II, Irena lived quietly in her Warsaw apartment. Her story wasn’t revealed until almost sixty years later! A book, Life in a Jar, was written shortly thereafter. A movie, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, was also filmed. Irena Sendler passed
passed away peacefully on May 12, 2008 and is remembered by many as a hero.
