David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was founded in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick (D.B.E, M.B.S, 1992 UNEP Global 500 Laureate) in memory of her late husband, David. Their primary focus is the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife.
The DSWT’s main conservation activity is enacted through their Orphan’s Project in which they rescue and rehabilitate elephants and rhinos. The DSWT has hand-raised over 150 elephants, the majority of which have been successfully rehabilitated into the Tsavo Conservation Area which is home to Kenya’s largest population of elephants as well as other incredibly diverse species.
The key to the success of DSWT’s efforts has been taking action at all levels focusing on individual animals, protection of national park borders and the education of future generations about wildlife conservation. Their conservation is socially-conscious and environmentally sensitive.
