What's Trending?

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through social media, admiring your favorite influencers' trendy outfits and hairstyles, and feeling inspired to switch up your look to keep up with the latest fashion fads?

You may have fallen victim to the alluring trap of fashion trends. Fashion trends dominate the younger generations, dictating what to buy, how to style your hair, what to discard, and how to fit into a society ruled by fashion.

People find fashion trends to be quite helpful. According to Fibre2Fashion, fashion enables individuals to express their creativity and explore new aspects of their personality.

"Some people express themselves through how they dress," said Jada, a freshman at Norfolk State.

"Most fashion trends are about expression, and the youth expressing themselves through clothing is a positive thing," said Franklin Asare, the designer for Ivory and Gold. Ivory and Gold is an ASA Modeling Troupe.

Even though fashion trends have positive effects, they also have negative impacts. Fashion trends set unrealistic beauty standards, leaving individuals feeling inadequate and starting to resent their bodies.

"The standard is set to be like they need makeup, and they need this body type," said Shyia, a freshman at Norfolk State.

Not only did it affect beauty standards, but it also impacted consumerism. People are bombarded with the notion that they must keep up with the latest styles to fit in.

According to Medium, it leaves dissatisfaction with one's current wardrobe and a constant desire for more.

They also stated that industries advertise to buy cheap clothes so consumers can spend more money.

You can spend up to hundreds of dollars depending on the fashion trend.

According to Financial Bestlife, the average person spends around $161 monthly on clothes. Women spend nearly 76% more than men spend on clothing in a year.
