A Genesis for First Gen Students

On November 8th, 2023, Genesis celebrated the launch of their new organization. Dr. Danielle Bynum-Williams, the Director of TRIO Student Support Services at Norfolk State University, founded Genesis for first-generation students and those who support them.

The name Genesis has a deeper meaning than it appears; it means "first." The students are the first in their family to attend college, as are their supporters.

First-generation students make up about 45% of the student body at Norfolk State University and 19% of the graduate student body.

Dr Williams has always believed that the students need their own space when she works with a specialized group. Her take is that Norfolk State University students should have a space of their own.  She states that services that are relevant to students' own experiences are needed.

“I started Genesis because I really started to delve into my work for first-generation students,” stated Dr. Williams

She envisions that this organization will aid in increasing the graduation rate for students and the continued enrollment of first-generation college students. She expresses her love, encouragement, and understanding for the students.

She says it takes a community to accomplish something no one in your family has ever done, which led to the creation of Genesis. Because of this, you might not receive the same assistance if you don't understand the pressures, conditions, and situations that first-generation students endure.

Dr. Williams  First-generation students face many challenges, and she’s hoping that Genesis will be the supportive community that they need.

“I am a supporter of first-generation students because I’m not first-generation and if it wasn’t for my mother going to and completing college then I wouldn’t have either.” stated Dr. Williams.
