Remembering Jahari George

Jahari George, a fellow Spartan, was the victim of a shooting that occurred not far from Norfolk States campus on the night of September 2nd, 2023.

Jahari pursued a degree in engineering and was a part of the Student Government Association, Spartan Echo, RCN Honors College, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the swim team. According to a statement released by Norfolk State, a suspect is in custody for the shooting and security efforts have been raised on campus.

To honor Jahari, here are personal recollections of him from close friends:

Jahari George  was my roomate my first two years of college and was someone I considered one of my best friends. During my first week, freshman year, at NSU my first impression of Jahari resulted in me thinking he was to himself, soft-spoken, and demure. As agoge week commenced and Jahari and I slowly meshed into the same friend group I found that my first thoughts of him were completely wrong. He was very outgoing and continued to push himself to do greater things than before throughout his college career.

He held strong beliefs which he articulated strategically to convince even me to feel strongly about what he spoke of. The two of us clicked and for a moment seemed inseparable. Whether it was walking to class or going to on-campus events we moved together, along with other friends, which truly made my college experience the best it could be. The countless nights we spent playing video games, walking around stores, or just talking about life are priceless and will always be held in my heart.

During our SP3 internship (Students Promise to Persist with Purpose) over the summer of 2023, I saw Jahari really begin to bloom. From networking to team bonding, he would always go the extra mile to make sure he excelled as a scholar and young professional. Coming into the Fall 2023 semester he continued to carry the same scholarly attitude and had plans to progress and build up the community here at NSU.

Jahari has taught me to really appreciate the people close to me. He taught me to love, cherish, and show gratitude for every day even the uneventful ones. It is so unfortunate that situations like these have to occur in order for us to realize how much we take for granted, so I want us all to take this as a reminder to not forget.

I want all of us to remember Jahari as the leader he was and to uphold the fact that he wanted change. He wanted to create a safer campus for us all and we should honor that by not simply saying it, but by putting words into action.
