Spartan News

Many students are able to come to school for free with programs such as VCAN and DNIMAS and the multitude of scholarship opportunities creating sufficient incentives to become a spartan.

Because of the rise in attendance and limited housing options on campus, for the second academic year, a select number of students must be housed in hotels located near campus in Downtown Norfolk and Virginia Beach. According to NSU housing, those placed in hotels are said to be individuals who were last to complete their housing application before the semester began. While this may be true, individuals such as Ayana Northern, a junior at NSU, who claimed to have submitted their housing application on time still found herself in the hotels. She notes her experience by saying, “I feel like I am living lavish in the hotels…The only bad thing is being off campus and having to drive.”

Back on campus amidst the bustle of a new academic year, there are two new additions to the dining options including the Bagel Beaux which is located on the first floor of the library, and Jawn Voyage which is located in Spartan Station right next to Milk and Honey. Bagel Beaux features a variety of bagels that are served plain, with cream cheese, or as a sandwich with different options in that sense. Jawn Village has an array of sandwiches, cheesesteaks, fries, and more with its focus on East Coast, northern street food delicacies. The inclusion of the new eateries has livened up the campus and has created diverse options for those who may have a taste for something new.

Located right behind the library on the west side of campus,  Norfolk State has started the task of replacing the Roy A. Woods Laboratory building with the New Science Building which has already started the test pile installation. The new building will be four stories and will hold chemistry, biology, and physics research, classes, and offices. The building will include a greenhouse and planetarium with immersive science tools, state-of-the-art technology, and an emphasis on community collaboration according to Work Program Architects. Norfolk State is also partaking in other projects such as a new warehouse and the renovation of the Hamm Fine Arts Building.

With the number of new freshmen students increasing yearly, NSU is truly embodying the spirit of growth. The campus is constantly growing and thriving with new features and opportunities that encourage spartans to better their academic journeys.   Norfolk State University continues to open the doors for academic excellence and transformative growth in an environment where innovation thrives and scholars flourish.
