THE SPRING '23 RECAP AND FALL '23 WELCOME

The Voice of the Spartan Community and Beyond

Welcome back Spartans! With summer coming to an end and the temperature ready to drop, the Fall 2023 semester is in full effect. While the campus looks familiar, there are fresh features to embrace this new academic year. From the increase of freshmen to the new variety of dining options, there are a plethora of additions welcoming the students of NSU.

The class of 2027 arrived at NSU with a bang! Around 1500 freshmen joined the spartan family making this one of NSU's biggest freshmen classes. Last year, according to NSU.edu, the school was met with around 1300 freshmen, so this influx of new students begs the question:

What inspired the increase of students?

While some believe that the number of students attending college generally increased over the past two years due to the decreasing COVID-19 cases, according to the NSU website, “Many colleges and universities have seen steady declines in enrollment over the past few years, with a drop of 4.1% overall in spring 2022,” which emphasizes the prevalence of NSUs steadily growing attendance rates. In 2022 the school saw a 17% increase in new students compared to the previous year, and today the numbers continue to grow. When asked, many freshmen talked about the community an HBCU cultivates and their need for that “HBCU experience”.

Norfolk State is also generous in terms of financial aid.
