LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT St. Johns Members, The days are getting shorter and the growing conditions are slowing down, but the Maintenance Team continues to stay busy with many projects on the course. The work we do now will pay big dividends in the upcoming months and in the Spring. Early this month, we will be removing a large section of pine trees adjacent to the chipping green. Shade issues from last winter had a terrible effect on the green’s condition during its grow in. By thinning out these trees, more sunlight will reach the putting surface, warming the soil and helping the plant. Additional tree work will continue through the course as we continue to remove dead pine trees adjacent to the fairways through much of the course. We are completing a draining project on the 8th tee box that will eliminate the pooling water near the water station. Paving and concrete work will be finished soon, helping create a more aesthetic area. There are also several other areas on the course that we will add drainage boxes this winter, addressing many areas that remain wet after periods of heavy rain. Lastly, we will complete our pre-emerge herbicide application targeting winter weeds and poa annua on the course this month. This application will help prevent weeds from surfacing and will last about 90 days. We will follow up with spot treatments through the spring to help keep the course looking great! Enjoy your Holiday! Thank you, Andy Maguire Superintendent 8
