Millenáris Park
NP : I always lived in the neighbourhood of Moszkva Tér ( Szell Kalman Tér ). Located close by is Millenáris park , the biggest and most popular park in this area . I have a lot of memories connected to this place . The first and maybe the most important memory goes back to my high school years . In this time my friends and I were not so much interested in the cultural part of the Millenáris . For us it we just a social place and used it to hang out . We used to meet up at “ Corn Park “, that ’ s how we called the park , as for an absurd matter of fact real corn and grapes grew there . This is it ’ s main characteristic .
Often we would sit there and drink from the afternoon until midnight . It was like a bar or a party place ; a lot of young people had fun there . It became a small community during the night and you could get connected with other groups of people . I never feel this in hungary the the goup of people are not isolated , get connection with the others . This place also had a very special feeling , at night framed with this industrial buildings , sitting in the gras , we felt the freedom .
In the first years of university , I didn ’ t go there anymore ; maybe , because I changed the area . I started hanging out closer to the new school . After a few years , I found out that it was now forbidden to drink and smoke in „ Corn Park “. This changed the place . It didn ’ t change in appearance , but atmosphere . Also the people who use the park now have changed . Now „ Corn Park “ is closed during the night , and in the day it is full with playing children . It became a meeting place for the for the new mother . From now and then I pay a visit to Pixel Gallery , when there is an exhibition . I also went to a Boban Markovic concert there . This is my latest but not so important memory about Millenáris .
RR : When I arrived in Budapest , I spent the first week at a friends place on Buda side .
Millenáris was on my way home . Each time I used the park as a short cut , I recognized a strange high-pitched sound . It was an uncomfortable sound and I wondered if they used it to get rid of pigeons or homeless people . That ’ s why Millenáris to me is a space of uncertainty .
