PH $1500-2000 Autograph letter on ‘Brady’s/National Portrait Gallery’ stationery, signed by Mathew Brady. Two pages, 5"x8", front and back, dated December 22, 1878. To Mrs. Townsend, regarding a portrait of her husband which had been on display at his gallery. Light soiling, Fine condition. We cannot be 100% sure this is not a secretarial, thus offer this as a dictated letter. Brady was known to have poor eyesight and had an aversion to writing. Fine. (University Archives LOA). PH $350-500 Hand-tinted color engraving (10"x6¼”, 12"x9" overall), by Hogenberg, heading and text in German, not translated. Image shows engagement between more than 1,000 combatants, including King Henry IV and Christian I (each identified). Caption of 4 couplets printed across lower margin. Vivid colors and meticulous detail, minor soiling. Near fine. 333 D 1858 LARGE STEEL ENGRAVING OF US CAPITOL ............................................................................... PH $300-400 Gorgeous engraved image (12"x9¼”), building image area (7¼”x4") of the United States Capitol as it existed in 1858. Print was used as ‘The Ledger Carrier’s’ (publication) annual greeting (read subscription premium) for 1858, taken from the original by T.U. Walter. Various patriotic expressions in lower margins. Slight stains in the blank right side, otherwise fine. (University Archives LOA). 334 330 Close to 90 sketches, photos and other similar types of items that adorned the wall of famous Hollywood restaurant BROWN DERBY that ended its spectacular run in 1985. These are fine reproductions authorized by The Brown Derby. One finds actors, with many academy award winners, political figures including President Franklin D Roosevelt, celebrities and others. Size varies from roughly 7½”x9½” to 13½”x12½”. Diners reveled in going from room to room in the Derby looking at all the photos & sketches of famous people who had eaten there. With the closing of the Brown Derby (1929-85), one of the last old Hollywood restaurant icons offering a true slice of entertainment history as well as Americana, is gone forever. Would make fantastic decoration for diner, movie house or den, or for resale. Overall fine, some light water or corner damage to some. Very much worth a look. 1885 PETER HENRY EMERSON, ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH ‘THE HAUNT OF THE PIKE,’ PLATE XV ......................................................... PH $1000-1500 Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936), Cuban-born 19th century British photographer who was instrumental in establishing photography as an art form. His original photographs are RARE. This example is a vintage 1885, platinum photograph titled ‘The Haunt of the Pike, Plate XV, from ‘Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads,’ 11¼”x8", custom matted, overall size 18"x15", very fine and highly desirable. 335 – POSTERS & PRINTS – 331 D 1578 DUTCH HAND-TINTED ENGRAVING, ‘TAKING OF GHENT’ BY HOGENBERG ............. PH $350-500 Hand-tinted color engraving (10½”x7¼”, 12¼”x8½” overall) by Hogenberg, heading and text in German, not translated. Image shows soldiers in town, ‘escorting’ citizenry. Rhyming caption of 12 lines in three stanzas is printed along bottom with the date, in Roman numerals, ‘1577 to 1578 October.’ Vivid colors and meticulous detail, printed on laid paper, blank upper margin has been almost entirely been trimmed away. Small stain at right edge partially on image. Near fine.
