Saint Louis, Missouri Autographs 07.pmd Entire poll book for the election of 1840 from ‘Dewit’ [sic] County, Illinois, held in ‘Wainsville’ [sic]. Ten page folio with additional 10 blank leaves, docketed with additional page addressed to County clerk, apparently complete with tally page. Prior to his election as President in 1860, Lincoln was a determined party functionary, actively campaigning for Whig Presidential candidates in every general election from 1840 to 1856. This was his first attempt to be elected an Elector from Sangamon County, a position that always eluded him. His name appears in manuscript on each page with column for tallies. Unusual to find an intact poll book; a rare relic from Abraham Lincoln’s early political days. (University Archives LOA). Autographs & Documents 137 Page 137 11/27/2013, 3:21 PM
