PH $4000-6000 Extraordinary archive of 10 pieces, from family of President James Madison. Nine items signed by his father and some signed by other family members. A nice view of Colonial Virginia and Madison’s Kentucky lands. The archive comprises: (1) 1767 document signed by James Madison, Sr and James Walker detailing the deposition of William McDonnough; (2) 1767 deposition of Robert Martin for land Benjamin Winslow, signed by James Madison, Sr; (3) 1771 court document Bogles and Scoff vs Taliaferro[?] signed by James Madison, Jr; (4) document signed by John Madison, presumably the President’s uncle, in 1772, and is signed by John Madison three times; (5) 1771 James Madison, Sr. signed receipt for supplies; (6) James Madison Sr. signs June 11, 1772 document pertaining to ‘holding an inquest on the body of Dover a Negro man slave belonging to Wm. Crawford of the county of Culpeper’; (7) 1773 legal document regarding Enoch Hill and T. Burnley indenture to Richard Eastin; (8) 1773 legal document regarding Braxton Byrd and Maderson Lewis indentured to William Web; (9) Madison signed document regarding an agreement between Samuel Hamm and Thomas Gilbert; (10) Indenture dated Nov. 12, 1804, written by James Madison, Jr’s niece and ward, Nelly Conway Madison for ‘various tracts or parcels of land in the state of Kentucky’. Interesting selection of early legal documents, typical fine condition. (University Archives LOA) 768 769 Manuscript document signed by Major General Andrew Jackson. Document is contract for providing rations for 517 soldiers under the command of ten listed captains, plus one ‘pack horse Man.’ Dated March 8, 1813, measures 7¾”x13", also signed by John Coffee, colonel for the ‘Tennessee voluntary cavalry’ at Camp Jackson (near Natchez, Mississippi Territory). Watermarked paper expertly restored, fine condition.
