/D 1888-90 SIGNIFICANT 11-PAGE ARCHIVE OF
4 SIGNED LETTERS FROM W.T. SHERMAN
........................................................................... PH $5000-7000
Archive containing three handwritten letters signed by
Sherman, as well as a fourth signed by him but in another’s
hand. All addressed to Gen. William E. Strong of Chicago.
Dates range from November 1888 to July 1890. The Nov 27,
1888, letter reads in part, ‘In my judgment the horse and rider
are excellent, and reflect great credit on the designer. I am glad
you have made such progress in this matter. Ours at St. Louis
was the first done, but you are entitled to great praise
notwithstanding...’ Each of the other three letters are written
entirely in Sherman’s hand and are signed by him. They are
dated March 27, April 3 and July 15, 1890. All reference the
statue of Grant to be erected in Chicago, as well as various
delays, meetings and more. Grant, of course, had died in 1885,
and memorials were popping up around the country. The statue
was not dedicated until Oct 7, 1891. Sherman himself died in
early 1891. Very fine.
