PH $500-700 /D 1859 JOHN ERICSSON SIGNED LETTER ...... PH $1000-1500 Handwritten one page letter (7¾”x9¾”), signed by naval engineer John Ericsson. Letter discusses centrifugal machines and strength of foundations needed for his engines. Typed version included for easier reading. Fine to very fine. Ericsson would go on to design the USS Monitor during the Civil War. D 1776-85 REVOLUTIONARY WAR LETTERS ........................................................................... PH $1500-2500 Fair copied letters, string-bound, compiled by Alpheus Packard, from wealthy American-born physician and loyalist, Silvestor Gardiner, beginning May 9, 1776, and ending March, 1785. First letter talks of fleeing Boston after the British evacuated ‘my fears of the Troops leaving the Town of Boston, which they did on the 17th day of March in such a precipitate manner as gave the friends of Government only four or five days notice, which put them under the necessity of leaving almost every thing they had.’ Subsequent letters originally from Halifax or England refer to the ‘Rebellion’. More than 50 pages, some toning, unnumbered. Fine condition. Interesting content for further research. PH $350-500 Twice-signed carte-de-visite photograph of Mary Custis Lee, wife of Robert E. Lee. Photograph side signed ‘Mary Custis Lee’, back side inscribed ‘Mr. Hunt/by Mary Custis Lee’ in same hand. Faintly hand-tinted sepia, 2¼”x3½” on 2½”x3¾” photographic mount, trimmed at top edge, rounded corners. Pictorial photographer’s imprint on verso M. Miley/ Photographer/Lexington,/VA.’ Mrs. Lee was great granddaughter to Martha Washington. Not dated. Fine condition. 630 Folded letter signed ‘Saml Mitchelson Junr,’ to Richard Oswald, a Scottish merchant best known as the British commissioner who negotiated the 1782 Peace of Paris. Two pages (7½”x9"), from Edinburgh, August 7, 1778, Bishop’s Mark postal marking. Mitchelson, a Scottish attorney advises Oswald on mostly commercial and naval matters, but also mentions the recent French treaty with America.
