Giving Evidence to
House of Lord’s Select
Committee
-
By Dr Prabodh Mistry
On 19th November 2013, one of our
Prajapati Samaj members was called
to give evidence to the House of
Lord’s Select Committee on Science
and Technology. The committee
was investigating United Kingdom’s
technological readiness to use household
and industrial wastes to produce energy
and valuable chemical products. The
member is Dr Prabodh B Mistry and
we put some questions to him that we
felt would be of interest to some of our
readers.
How did you come to be selected?
One of the Government advisers has
known me and knows about my policy and
strategy work in generating energy from
waste streams. He called me in October
2013 asking if I would be willing to give
evidence based on my knowledge and
experience in waste management.
What was required to be done?
Before attending, the clerk of the
Pictured above - Dr Prabodh Mistry
Committee sent me four key questions,
around which they may ask questions.
The same questions were also given
to two other people from the industry,
whom I had known but not met, and all
three of us were to be questioned as a
panel. There were several such sessions
held during the full inquiry which lasted
three months, taking evidence from over
thirty people. Each session is captured
in written format as well as a video – one
based on my session can be found
at: http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/
Player.aspx?meetingId=14251. This will
remain on the Parliament TV channel until
November 2014.
How was the evidence used?
The evidence has been summarised in
a report that is published: http://www.
publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201314/
ldselect/ldsctech/141/141.pdf. The
report together with the detailed technical
evidence, which runs into several hundred
pages, is being used by university
departments, research organisations and
engineering companies in the UK to help
develop the knowledge and technologies
to produce sustainable energy and
chemicals.
How have you benefited – did you get
paid?
Giving evidence in this manner is
considered an honour and only expenses
are paid. Participating in this has helped
me to raise my profile among policy
makers, academics and the industry and
will hopefully mean more business for my
company (EHV Engineering), in the long
term!
