An alternative approach is to dig a hole near a water source and drink water that seeps into it. Even though the surrounding soil filters the water, this method does not guarantee it’s free from bacteria and other microorganisms. 2. Solar Still/Distilling This is one of the safer methods for gathering potable water when it’s not readily available. With this technique, you’ll get water minus those nasty microorganisms. Step 1: Dig a pit or hole in the ground. Step 2: Place your water container in the center of the pit or hole. It will collect condensed water from the solar still. Step 3: Cover the pit or hole with a sheet of sturdy transparent plastic. Place rocks on the plastic around the edges of the pit or hole to secure tightly. Step 4: Place another rock or any heavy object on the center of the plastic so that it points towards the container. And it’s done!
