Another fun activity is watching the wildlife that live in the park. Commonly seen birds include the Mountain Bluebird, Steller's Jay, White Throated Swift, Canyon Wren, American Dipper, Golden Eagle and the Peregrine Falcon. Peregrine Falcons live on ledges in the canyon and swoop down on other flying birds for supper. The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world, reaching speeds of 200 MPH, and will even pursue an eagle. Look for the Blue Grouse in sagebrush areas along roadsides and trails. Some commonly seen animals are Mule Deer, chipmunks, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels, cottontail rabbits, marmots, ringtails, weasels, badgers, salamanders, lizards, and a variety of non-venomous snakes.

Mountain Lions, Black Bears, Elk and Bighorn Sheep are occasionaly spotted.

The weather at Black Canyon of the Gunnison can be harsh with extreme hot and cold temperatures. Summer highs can be beautiful at 70 degrees, but some days get into the 90's or even 100 degrees. Summer nights can get down to 30 degrees, so dress in layers, and bring a variety of clothing. Winter highs are usually below 40 degrees, with nights often dipping below zero. Many of the park roads are closed in the winter, and will open in April.

Spending a night or two at the park will give you more time to explore the trails and hike to the river if you want to.
