Spring 2017
Courses
Lords of the Horizons:
The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire
With Turkey increasingly, and even dangerously,
seeking a future outside the EU and possibly
even NATO, this course offers a history of over
600 years of the Ottoman Empire; from worldclass superpower to its prodigious, protracted
and total decline.
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness:
Three Plays by Arthur Miller
All the plays focus on the ‘American Dream’,
and we will look at Miller’s ideas about the
United States and its social issues, as well as
some close reading of the texts.
Students are asked to purchase their own
copies of the plays: All My Sons, Death of a
Salesman, A View from the Bridge.

Florence and the Medici
No. 203
We will examine art and architecture in
Florence commissioned by the Medici family
during its 300-year rule, from the 15th to the
18th century. Great artists were employed
to undertake ground-breaking works, from
Donatello’s sculpture to Botticelli’s mythological
paintings; from Vasari’s decorative schemes to
courtly portraits. We shall consider the reasons
they were commissioned and their effect on
the appearance of the city.
