Autumn 2016 Study Days Shakespeare’s Music No. 113 To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death we shall listen to music that he himself would have encountered both in Stratford and in London, and analyse in detail the role of music in his plays and other works. We will then explore how the plays have since inspired classical music, ballet and musicals. The Art of Stanley Spencer Thursday 6th Oct 10.00 -15.30 £30 (includes lunch) Tutor: Jeremy Neville No. 114 Stanley Spencer was one of the most original artists of the 20th century. Famous for portrayals of biblical events taking place in his native village of Cookham, Berks, he was also an official war artist and a fine painter of landscapes and portraits. His colourful personal life inspired a revolution in the painting of the nude. We will explore the immensely varied work of this intriguing artist whose paintings are both life-affirming and strangely moving. Greek Tragedy: The Original Chorus Line We will explore the origins of Greek tragedy and how it was presented in ancient Greek theatre. There will be some practical work on different translations of Agamemnon, part one of the Oresteia by Aeschylus. Rembrandt’s Masterpieces Thursday 10th Nov 13.30 -16.30 £15 Tutor: Ann Danks No. 115 Thursday 1st December 10.00 -15.30 £30 (includes lunch) Tutor: Suzi Turner No. 116 Rembrandt is considered to be the greatest artist of Holland’s Golden Age. From his works as a prominent portraitist in Amsterdam to the more contemplative images of his maturity, we will explore the artist’s original approach to subject matter and style.
