POSTMASTER: Send address changes to Southern Ulster Times, 300 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550 Church land deeded to Highland Library By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] History was recently made in Highland with the transfer of a deed for a 2.3-acre parcel on Elting Place from St. Augustine’s Church and the Archdiocese of New York to the Highland Library that will become the future home of a new library. In addition, it was announced that local officials, NYS Assemblyman Frank Skartados and NYS Sen. George Amedore, were able to secure a combined $450,000 that will go towards the $4.85 million project. The ceremony opened with the singing of the National Anthem by Alyssa Skartados. Fr. Thomas Lutz then presented Library Director Julie KelsallDempsey with the land deed “to be used to construct this wonderful new library. May God bless you and all the wonderful children, adults and everyone in the community that is going to benefit from this project.” Lutz quoted science fiction writer Isaac Asimov who once said at another dedication, that a library “is a spaceship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future; a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you and most of all a gateway to a better, happier and a more useful life.” Amedore said the $20
