Asaji Sushi Restaurant opens in Marlboro
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
The Asaji Sushi Japanese Restaurant recently opened at 1441 Route 9W in Marlboro in the old location of the Hidden Cellar , which closed in February after 11 years in business .
After changing over from an Italian to a Japanese menu , Leo Wu and Sam Xu opened in April , the first Asian offering in the Town of Marlboro . The name translates as “ First Sun .”
Wu was born in Hong Kong 33 years ago but grew up in Charleston , South Carolina . He began his career working in restaurants in high school but for the past decade he has been a partner in three other Asian restaurants in South Carolina , Georgia and Florida . He now commutes to Marlboro twice weekly from his home in Queens , New York . After visiting Marlboro , he decided it was the perfect place for yet another business venture .
Wu said Chinese food is more often deep or stir-fried while Japanese food is a mix of raw or cooked teriyaki flavored fish dishes . He said he procures his vegetables from New York City and he picks up his fish that arrives daily from Japan by air . Wu said one particular favorite is yellow tail tuna (‘ ahi ’) that costs $ 30 per pound . It comes mostly from the waters of Trinidad and Tobago as well as from Vietnam and Panama .
Wu said he has received many compliments from customers .
