Highland School
budget fails
The Highland school budget of
$41,656,096 with a tax levy of $26,413,846
failed to pass because it did not top the 60%
needed since the board decided to pierce
the tax cap. Though the tally was 728 yes
and 568 no, this represents only 56% of the
voters.
The school bus replacement proposition
passed by a vote of 704 to 597 and needed
only a simple majority. This is for seven
65-passenger buses, one 29-passenger
van and one suburban at a total cost of
$937,803, with nearly 60% of the cost later
covered in state transportation aid.
School Board members Sue Gilmore
and Tom Miller ran unopposed for another
term, winning by 859 and 914 respectively.
“I’m concerned because now we have to
look at ways to reduce. It was close but not
close enough,” Superintendent Deborah
Haab said, adding that fifty more yes votes
would have made the difference.
Haab said the school board will be
meeting soon to discuss their options of
either going to a contingency budget or
scheduling another vote with perhaps new
budget reductions.

At 5:09 pm on Monday afternoon the
Highland Fire Department received a
call of a fire at Camp Karlin Stolin, a
Hasidic summer camp near the end of
North Chodikee Lake Road in Highland.
The camp was empty at the time but
attracts nearly 200 kids in July and
August, mostly from Brooklyn in New
York City.
Upon arriving at the scene at 5:16 pm,
Chief Peter Miller said a bunkhouse was
completely engulfed in flames, with the
fire quickly spreading out across the
ground and into the woods.
