Glory days Marlboro top students reflect on high school years

This year ’ s Marlboro Valedictorian William Schlappich has a grade point average of 101.87 and is followed closely behind by Salutatorian Gina Martuscello , with an average of 101.56 .
Schlappich has recently been inducted into the Marlboro chapter of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society . He is a designated AP Scholar and is the recipient of the Rochester Institute of Technology Innovation and Creativity award .
During his high school career , Schlappich was a member of the School ’ s Student Senate and ran Cross Country in the winter and spring programs . He also participated in the Mega Moody ’ s Math Challenge and is a member of the Calvary Chapel of the Hudson Valley . During his summer breaks Schlappich was a lacrosse camp counselor , has videotaped the combined Highland / Marlboro Lacrosse team and been a volunteer scorekeeper in a youth basketball league . In addition , he has collected donated shoes for a program called ‘ Soles for Souls ’.
Schlappich has always loved Mathematics and Science courses , saying his interest was sparked in 8th grade when he took an accelerated math class with teacher Linda DeStefano .
“ I think math gets a bad rap but I always thought it was interesting solving problems , it was great ,” he said . “ In high school I took all of the math classes you could possibly take , like pre-calculus , calculus and statistics .”
Schlappich will be attending the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , NY and will be majoring in Mathematical Sciences “ and I am thinking about pulling in economics as a minor .” He said his major consists mostly of applied mathematics courses that are aimed at practical solutions in the real world rather than theoretical studies . He said he is also intrigued by RPI ’ s Geometry and Trigonometry offerings , concluding that the school “ seemed like the right choice for me .”
Besides DeStefano , Schlappich said

he loved his pre-calculus and calculus classes the he took with high school teacher Ray Leduc .
Schlappich said part of the reason he chose RPI was because it is relatively close to home “ but far enough so that my mom wouldn ’ t come up on the weekends . When I visited RPI the campus seemed great and was nicely spread out and the mathematics program seemed fantastic .”
Gina Martuscello has received a host of awards and accolades for her accomplishments ; being a New York State Academic Achievement Award winner , an AP Scholar , a Fleet Reserve Essay Contest winner , a Rensselaer Medal Award winner , and has earned a MHAL Scholar Athlete Award .
Martuscello is a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies and is president of the latter in school . In addition she is an alto saxophonist , playing at level VI NYSSMA , and was selected for the All County Band . She has participated in Girls State and went to the Hugh O ’ Brian Youth Leadership Program during her 10th grade summer .
Martuscello was captain of her Volleyball team and played on Marlboro ’ s Basketball team . She also was a member of the Science Olympiad team , has volunteered for events at St . Mary ’ s and St . Joseph churches and the town ’ s Bounty Festival .
Martuscello has a love for animals and has helped the Newburgh and Plattekill animal shelters and the Ulster County SPCA . She has tutored elementary school students and worked at the Marlboro Free Library .
Martuscello will be attending Fordham University in the fall , majoring Continued on page 26
