Vandals hit Marlboro High School Marlboro School Superintendent Michael Brooks confirmed that in the past month there were three separate incidents of vandalism at the High School, with the words ‘Class of 2016’ spraypainted on the outside of the dome of the Planetarium, on the baseball dugout and on the field turf. Brooks said these incidents appear to have taken place during the night and are still currently under investigation. The Marlborough Police are aware of the events. Brooks said if the perpetrators are caught, the outcome “can go anywhere from school discipline to anything that would be criminal. If it were criminal, certainly, we would enlist the support of the Police. These are pieces of property that deserve to be respected and we will enforce that respect that we expect. It can run the gamut, as far as what can be a consequence.” Second Dollar General coming to Plattekill Bond Brungard Marlboro’s baseball team celebrates as the Dukes won their first state title Saturday in Binghamton. Marlboro Lions honor top scholars By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] The Marlboro Lions Club recently held their third annual scholarship dinner at the Ship Lantern Inn in Milton. The Lions Club solicits essays from high school seniors – this year 19 applied and then select two who will each receive $2,000 and will be going on college in the fall. They receive half of the money now and the remaining half in January. This year the committee chose Gina Martuscello and Joshua Jennison as their scholarship recipients. The application process has each student write a biography as well as an essay about their goals and aspirations for the future. Ralph Walters said the two honorees “succeeded in convincing the committee that they were the best recipients for our award.” He along with Mici Simonofsky, Fred Callo and Peter Yeaple are members of the committee within the Lions Club that evaluates the applications. Betty Martuscello recused herself upon learning that her granddaughter was in the running for the scholarship. Walters said the committee looks at the student’s essay, letters of recommendation and what a student has Continued on page 26 WWW.SOUTHERNULSTERTIMES.COM If you have recently driven past the Plattekill Elementary School on Route 32, you may have noticed that the parcel directly adjacent to it has been excavated and is ready for the construction of a second Dollar General store. Plattekill Planning Board Chairwoman Cindy Hilbert said her board reviewed the proposed site plan and approved the project. She said the same people who own the current Dollar General closer to the center of town also own the proposed one that is now underway. The firm listed on the application is the WHNI Corporation. Planning Board Secretary Sue Bolde said the developer was issued a building permit on June 8 and the footprint of the structure will be 9,200 sq./ft., which is similar to the current store. She indicated that the façade and landscaping will be a little different but a similar low monument sign with the Dollar General name will be out by the road.
