MONDAY, JUNE 18 Milton farmer turns 100 By MARK REYNOLDS [email protected] L eonard Clarke was born on May 23, 1918 when Woodrow Wilson was President and America was embroiled in WW I. On November 11 the war ended with the signing of the Armistice with Germany. That year the Post Office issued its first airmail stamps, with the first service between New York City and Washington D.C.; the baseball season was cut short in September by order of the Secretary of War but not before the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs in the World Series four games to two. The first of two devastating flu pandemics, also known as the Spanish Flu, hit Boston, New York and Philadelphia and later spread to 46 states. The pandemic has been estimated to have claimed the lives of nearly 100 million people worldwide before disappearing by 1920. In March the President signed into law Daylight Savings Time but it was so unpopular, especially with farmers, that it was repealed in 1919 and not re-established until WW II.
