L
eonard Clarke was born on May 23, 1918
when Woodrow Wilson was President
and America was embroiled in WW I.
On November 11 the war ended with the
signing of the Armistice with Germany.
That year the Post Office issued its first
airmail stamps, with the first service
between New York City and Washington
D.C.; the baseball season was cut short
in September by order of the Secretary
of War but not before the Boston Red
Sox beat the Chicago Cubs in the World
Series four games to two. The first of two
devastating flu pandemics, also known as
the Spanish Flu, hit Boston, New York and
Philadelphia and later spread to 46 states.
The pandemic has been estimated to have
claimed the lives of nearly 100 million
people worldwide before disappearing by
1920. In March the President signed into
law Daylight Savings Time but it was
so unpopular, especially with farmers,
that it was repealed in 1919 and not
re-established until WW II.
