other words, we’ll each pick our own route and
then share our experience.) Nike Run Club let me
plug in previous running data — like weekly mileage
and race times — to come up with a personalized
15-week program. That’s pretty cool.
So far, the app has pushed me to do different
running exercises that I never would plan on.
For instance, speed workouts have been a focus.
The other day four repetitions of 800 meters
was the goal. Breaking out of my comfort zone
and sucking wind after each half-mile sprint felt
invigorating.
Don’t get me wrong, I miss swimming. But tapping
into tech like Nike Run Club has let me adapt
in our current situation. And versatility is key to
navigating these trying times that really have no
end in sight.
As for yoga, my mat is rolled up in a forgotten
corner for the time-being. The same isn’t true for
502 Power Yoga, the studio I frequented before
the world went topsy-turvy. The local business
has opened its studios, like the one in Jeffersonville,
for small numbers of yogis. But 502 has also
established virtual classes via Zoom. This means
you can get in the flow at home while still having
a sense of community online.
The options obviously don’t stop there. Equipment
makers are experiencing huge backlogs to
fulfill customer requests, like Concept 2 rowing
machines. I’m on a two-month waiting list that
only gives the opportunity to actually purchase
the pricey device.
Peloton finds itself in a similar boat. The stationary
bike built with a gigantic tablet screen attached
notifies shoppers that long delivery times are
expected. Spin classes from the safety of a living
room have probably never been more in fashion.
Getting into shape is never easy. With a pandemic,
you might feel overwhelmed on how to
even begin the process. But these tech tools
can serve as a springboard to a fitter version of
yourself.
