“ There ’ s so many pitfalls , because it can be seen as bribery or seen as you having a more intimate relationship with your boss than other employees ,” Reed said . “ In general , there are too many areas where you could really fall that would hurt your career more than help it .”
However , if everyone in the office is pitching in together on something , Starvaggi recommends participating , while making sure the gift is neutral , such as a gift card .
BUYING FOR BOSS
Starvaggi said the workforce continues to change with the times and is becoming more and more casual . However , don ’ t let that laid-back feeling cloud your better judgement , if you do decide to purchase your boss a gift .
“ If you do decide to give your boss a gift , it should be something that is not personal . It should be simple . It could be a gift card , maybe something you made or cooked for the holidays ,” Starvaggi said . “ If you ’ re going to do it , keep it simple . Don ’ t lavish it . The dollar amount is a huge factor in the gift . If you ’ re choosing to get them a gift , it should not be an expensive gift .”
Even better than an item , Starvaggi said a simple card works wonders .
“ Write them a holiday card , saying I really appreciate you hiring me , I admire your work ethic , and such . That goes so much further than a $ 20 Starbucks gift card ,” she said . “ There ’ s nothing as gracious as the written word .”
Reed said if someone really wants to purchase something for a boss , a donation to the boss ’ s favorite charitable cause may be just the right thing .
“ I find that very meaningful ,” Reed said , adding that the donation can even be as small as $ 5 . “ I find that can be a very impactful and appropriate gift .”
EMPLOYEE GIFTS
Starvaggi said bosses giving gifts to employees is much more acceptable , etiquette-wise . Though she urges employers to think twice before giving something really taste-specific , such as a turkey or ham .
“ What I would say is give everyone the $ 20 gift card instead of the turkey ,” she said . “ Gift cards are a great thing . People love gift cards .”
Reed agreed , adding to make sure all the gifts are uniform and the same value for each employee .
“ The gifts should not be too personal and can range from gift cards to cash bonuses ,” she said .
COWORKER GIFTS
As for coworkers , Reed said it depends on the level of friendship . She recommends keeping any gift-giving private , as to not make others feel uncomfortable if they don ’ t receive and / or gift a gift .
Starvaggi said no matter whom you choose to purchase gifts for , remember to always keep it professional .
“ I don ’ t think any gifts will be unappreciated ,” she said . “ You just need to make sure you don ’ t put anyone in an awkward situation .”
