Problem Gambling Awareness Month

The month of March is designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month( PGAM), a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing public awareness of gambling related harms and promoting prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Problem gambling, known as the“ hidden addiction” due to its lack of physical warning signs, impacts 1-4 % of U. S. adults( approximately 2.5-8 million people). It is heavily underreported, with 80-95 % of those affected never seeking treatment, hiding the extent of financial impact, mental health crisis, and suicide.
Problem gambling occurs when a person loses control over their gambling and continues despite negative consequences. These consequences can be financial, emotional, social, or physical, and they often build up quietly over time. Problem gambling can affect anyone, regardless of income, education, or background. It is not a personal failure or lack of willpower – it’ s a complex issue influenced by psychological, social, or environmental factors.
