Home is bigger than a house
By Christopher Harris SEKYL Editor
You know those signs outside an apartment complex or subdivision you see sometimes that say, " If you lived here, you ' d be home right now?"
It ' s a cute little attention-grabber for sure. But what it doesn ' t take into account is, unless you ' re just visiting that community or passing through-- you already are home.
To me-- to many of us, I ' m sure-- " home " isn ' t just the place where we lay our head at night or where we park the car in the garage, but it ' s our neighborhood. Our hometown. Our region. Our state, our nation, and ultimately( perhaps more meaningfully if we ever go full " Star Trek ") our world.
Home is our house, to be sure, but it extends beyond our four walls. It encompasses our neighbors, the events in our community, the businesses where we shop, and the things that improve our quality of life in the environment around us. Simply put, home is all of us, together, building a community-- like Southeast
Kentucky.
That ' s what we celebrate here at Southeast Kentucky Magazine, where we share with you this month articles of interest that fit neatly within the theme of the home. We take a tour of the historic 100-year-old residence of local real estate professional and Burnside City Councilor Brandon Becker, which captures his love of all things vintage and blends them with a distinctly modern touch.
We also feature another local professional who helps locals find a home of their own in the Lake Cumberland region— Bobby Sutton of Weichart Realtors-Ford Brothers, who not only knows his way around the hardwood in the living room but also the hardwood between the goals, where Sutton coaches AAU basketball.
Nothing brightens up a home quite like bringing in a bit of nature, and that ' s what Yellow Root Herbs specializes in. The downtown business carries everything from herbs for health to house plants to environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies, and you ' ll get a peek inside their doors in the pages that follow.
As mentioned earlier, home is what goes on in your community as well as inside your house, and there ' s maybe nothing more fun in March to celebrate St. Patrick ' s Day than the annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K, held by the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, a chance to get dressed up in green and run, walk, or even push a stroller alongside your friends and neighbors. We preview that lively event scheduled for Saturday, March 14 in this issue as well.
Lastly, your body is your home in a very real sense, and here at Southeast Kentucky Life Magazine, we always like to help provide info on ways to take care of that body and keep it fit and feeling good. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and with the disease having been in the news recently with the passing of actor James Van Der Beek, it ' s an ideal time to remind readers what to look for and how to help take care of themselves.
All that and more is in this edition of SEKYL. We appreciate you letting us into your home and we ' re glad to be a part of it-- and, specifically, of this community as a whole.
