Ask the Readers

What are you looking forward to when it comes to gardening / yard work?

Spring! The bees start a-buzzing, the birds get to singing, and green comes back into the landscape. It’ s a time of renewal. And a time for many to get the itch to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Of course, it can also be a time of itchy eyes and scratchy throats, as the springtime pollen plays havoc on some people’ s immune systems.
I am, sadly, one of those people. Every year I long to take a walk at my local park, to breathe in the spring air, warm myself in the sun after a long winter and make up for all that lost Vitamin D.
That usually lasts two, maybe three days max before I have to break out the
Benadryl and pray the wind dies down so I can take a breath without catching a lungful of pollen.
Still, I wouldn’ t trade springtime for anything in the world.
I’ ve recently gotten into the spirit of gardening – meaning that last year was my first full-bore attempt at growing and harvesting my own food. There were certainly more failures than successes, but I’ m hopeful that I’ ve climbed a bit higher on the steep learning, and that I’ ll have a few more successes under my belt this year. Or, I’ ll find brand new ways to mess up. Either way, I’ ll be out in the dirt and the sun, sneezing my head off and joining the thousands upon thousands that call themselves gardeners.
I am certainly not the only Pulaski Countian looking forward to getting in the garden, as we asked our readers for this spring edition of SEKL“ What are you most looking forward to for yardwork / gardening?”
Many had their answers at the ready, just as, I suspect, they have had their gardens planned out since mid-December. Here is a collection of the answers we received to that question. As always, answers may have been modified for grammar or spelling, or to remove emojis because they may not print out properly.
