Throughout treatment, participants learn to recognize triggers, develop healthy coping strategies, improve communication, manage stress, and create realistic plans for maintaining recovery. These skills support not only sobriety, but also stronger relationships, increased confidence, and greater independence.
Connection is another essential part of the recovery process. Through self-help meetings and peer support activities, residents discover they are not alone in their struggles. They learn from others with similar experiences and begin building support systems that continue long after treatment ends.
Anchored in Recovery also emphasizes whole-person wellness. Physical activity, health education, nutrition, sleep hygiene, and stress management are integrated into treatment because overall well-being plays an important role in sustaining recovery. By developing healthy routines and habits, residents strengthen their ability to maintain positive change and improve their quality of life.
Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by substance use, whether it is a loved one, neighbor, colleague, or friend. The challenges can be far-reaching, but so can the positive impact of recovery. It was this understanding and desire to create opportunities for healing that inspired the vision behind Anchored in Recovery.
At Adanta, the idea for Anchored in Recovery program was championed by several staff with family members impacted by substance use and was put into action by a long-term therapist who spent more than two decades working in the mental health field. The program has continued to evolve, and the number of residents has continued to increase since first opening its doors in August 2023.
The impact of Anchored in Recovery is perhaps best reflected in the voices of the staff who witness recovery and transformation every day. For them, being part of the program is more than a profession— it is an opportunity to help individuals rediscover hope, rebuild their lives, and realize their potential.
• Mechelle understands many of the challenges residents face because she lived them herself. After 25 years of active addiction, she now uses her recovery journey to encourage others.
" Working at Anchored in Recovery is more than a job for me," she says. " It ' s an opportunity to give back what was freely
given to me. I know the struggle, but I also know the healing and freedom that recovery can bring."
Her experience demonstrates that recovery is not simply something taught, it is something that can be lived every day.
• Brad ' s story offers another example of transformation. After years of addiction, he believed his future would never be different from his past. Everything changed when someone believed in him before he believed in himself.
Today, he works with men facing many of the same fears and challenges he once experienced.
" My goal is not to create the light for them," Brad says, " but to sit with them in the darkness until they learn how to create their own."
His words reflect a core belief of the program: recovery is not about rescuing people. It is about helping them recognize the strength, resilience, and potential that already exist within them.
Every day, the team at Anchored in Recovery witnesses’ lives being rebuilt. Men regain confidence, repair relationships, establish goals, and begin to see themselves beyond their addiction. They rediscover their identities as fathers, sons, brothers, friends, workers, and members of their communities.
Recovery is not the end of a story— it is the beginning of a new chapter. Additionally, since Anchored in Recovery is part of Adanta Community Mental Health Center, program staff can help link participants to other needed services in the community to continue supporting their recovery journey.
