families. Dee is a newcomer to the area, but she has already made her mark as a face of Burnside Tourism in our county. Dee works tirelessly year-round to engage with community partners, plan operations, and provide a whole lot of magic to the Island. She is, without a doubt, an invaluable asset to Burnside Tourism, and I am in awe of her commitment to our shared vision. It is my true honor to call her my teammate. Together, we thank our families for supporting us every winter as we essentially live at the state park for months at a time. They stand beside us through the long nights, changed plans, and occasional asks for a“ quick favor” of free family assistance on last-minute tasks. Our families know how much Dee and I care about Christmas Island, and we make seasonal sacrifices to bring our vision to life.
Not many ask what happens after the lights turn off and Burnside Island is engulfed in quiet darkness. Most nights, I drive home with nothing playing on the radio, as the official holiday music soundtrack loop replaying in my head is enough on its own. I kick my snowy boots off at the door and creep past sleeping family members, often leaving a small trail of glitter in my path. I make it a point to stop and look at my own Christmas tree, certainly paling in comparison to the wonderland I left. The lights flicker off sparkling ornaments and reflect a happy haze over the stockings to its left. It’ s in these moments that I’ m thankful to have a chance to provide a glow to others during the happiest time of the year. For that reason, I, lastly, want to thank our Christmas Island visitors for allowing me to have my dream job in creating lasting memories for their friends and families as they enjoy the fruit( cake) of our labor under star and LED-lit skies.
