“ We ’ re looking for guys who love to play this great game . We ’ re going to figure out a way to get those guys in the game and they have to try to do their part in making each other better ,” Boggs said . “ What ’ s so unique about this team right now is that we don ’ t have great numbers necessarily , but they ’ re hungry .”
One thing that Brookwood does need to drastically improve is their defense . The Warriors lost five games last season , giving up no less than 45 in those losses . They gave up 60 or more three times and gave up 77 in the region title game versus Valwood . In total , Brookwood gave up 306 points in their five losses . Coach Boggs said that they have to be in constant pursuit of the ball and force more turnovers .
“ There were so many things that needed to be improved upon . Space is the enemy of a good defense . You can ’ t allow space and the way you don ’ t allow space is you have to be in pursuit ,” Boggs said . “ We pursued really , really well this summer and what we ’ re seeing is when you pursue well , obviously you ’ re going to minimize yardage , but it enhances the amount of turnovers you ’ re going to create . I think some of those games , even though we weren ’ t going to break any defensive records had we just forced another turnover we ’ d have found a way to win .”
Brookwood will be able to test that theory when they suit up for their all important pre-season scrimmage against Pataula on Aug . 9 before their season opener at Westfield on Aug . 16 . The Warriors ’ home opener will take place on Aug . 30 against Maclay . n
