The new look Brookwood Warriors
THOMASVILLE — The Brookwood Warriors have had a very different off-season . For the last few years they have had a legitimate and solidified one-two punch in quarterback Rodge Waldrop and running back T . J . Thomas . Both have graduated along with many other key contributors on offense . However , Warriors head coach Shane Boggs has said that some spots have been filled and others have some very “ healthy ” competition .
“ We ’ re excited . I ’ m just really pleased with the number of guys that have really put in the work and have really gotten better every day ,” Boggs said . “ We graduated a really good group as everyone knows and went into the off-season with quite a few unknowns and there have been some guys that have really played well and grabbed some of those spots . We ’ ve still got some competition in some spots and that ’ s always healthy . We ’ ll see how the rest of the summer plays out .”
Coach Boggs and the Warriors ’ coaching staff have the monumental task of replacing two of the most dynamic football players to come out of Brookwood , Thomas and Waldrop .
At time of writing , we don ’ t know who will be Brookwood ’ s next QB . We do know that it is between Colquitt County transfer Pearce Hightower and Rodge Waldrop ’ s younger brother and incoming freshman , Roland Waldrop . Both are skilled , though it has been said that Hightower is a better runner while Waldrop seems to be the better passer .
When asked about leadership ability , Coach Boggs said it was tough to distinguish between the two as both Hightower and Waldrop have proven to be great leaders over the summer . Many would think that Hightower ’ s two years of varsity experience with the Packers would put him ahead of Waldrop , but the freshman has been described as surprisingly “ game ready .”
The idea of a dual quarterback system , while possible , is not likely . Though there is no time table for the decision , Boggs did say that Hightower and Waldrop ’ s performances in the pre-season scrimmage against Pataula on Aug . 9 will be very important in the decision making process .
Whoever Brookwood ’ s QB ends up being , they will have a difficult job ahead with one less dynamic weapon at receiver . Rex Schofill , who set the Georgia state record for receiving yards in a game against Deerfield-Windsor last season , is now with Thomasville as a Bulldog . Despite the new quarterback , Boggs emphasized not relying on any facet of the offense . Instead , focusing on a balanced offensive attack and saying that both Waldrop and Hightower are very capable of running that offense .
However , weapons are still important and the Warriors do still have Seth Boggs , who had a breakout season in 2023 and also set the Georgia state record for receiving yards in a game before it was broken in the same game by Schofill . The Warriors also have Briggs Daniel and Isaiah Hill retuning , both of whom contributed heavily last season . Coach Boggs said that what they are truly looking for are guys who love football and are hungry to play .
