business district of South Chicago are funded by Special Service Area
#5, which generally includes Commercial Avenue from 87th St. south
to South Chicago Ave.; 91st St. from Exchange to Houston; and 92nd
St. from Exchange to Harbor Drive.
The SSA provides many benefits for the area, including paying for
a security patrol person from Total Security Management to patrol
the business district six days a week. Officer DeLuca is the regular
officer, with substitutes on his days off, and the Chamber hires a
second patrol officer during the December holiday season. Officer
DeLuca gets calls daily to disperse loiterers, remove unruly patrons
from businesses, catch or hold shoplifters and so forth. Throughout
the year, he has consistently worked with police officers, detectives
and business owners in efforts to make Commercial Avenue a safer
location to shop, work and live.
The SSA also operates a system of security cameras in the
neighborhood, used to gather information about criminal activity.
The SSA is in the process of expanding the system, which has
repeatedly proven its worth in helping the police make arrests.
