Thurles Drama Group presents John
B. Keane’s classic play - set in the
rural Ireland of the 1950s, where
money was scarce and small
farming people struggled to survive.
Sive lives with her grandmother and
uncle Mike whose wife Mena is
permanently unhappy with her domestic situation. Mena sees an opportunity when
matchmaker Thomaseen Sean Rua arrives with a proposal of marriage - to a much
older man - for Sive.
Matters involving morality, love, money, family, greed, loneliness and loyalty are all
part of this brilliant story. Most important of all, this play is about real people living
real life in 1950s Ireland.

The action takes place in Paris, 1890, one
week after Vincent Van Gogh’s suicide at the
age of 37, as his grieving brother, Theo, recalls
his life through the many letters they shared.
An intense delivery reveals the contents of
the letters, allowing us to feel the loss, anger,
frustration and even the joy of his
tumultuous relationship with his sibling.
Anyone who loves art, passion and life itself
should see this play; it is a renewing
experience and an insight into one of
history’s most gifted, haunted masters.
