Hannah Merchant
My view of Britishness is not black or white but rather a shade of grey . Although I experience microaggressions , I exist in a middle ground and a weird state of limbo as I see the racism and colourism my mother , father , sister face . I struggle with the idea of Britishness as there is no single answer and its roots in colonialism is also a part of my identity . Being British is not just stereotypical patriotic images of Churchill , bull dogs or even the Union Jack . For me , being British is a sense of belonging , identity , and familiarity .
