Liam Carey (composer, PhD) “I had a piece performed that I had written for string quartet, called Fever Dream. It’s always great to have a public performance of an original piece, especially in front of such large and appreciative audience. As a composer, it is always invaluable to have high quality public performances such as this to help develop a public profile. The fact that the performance was documented has given me another recording to add to my portfolio which I can use to future promote my work. I enjoyed the variety of the programme and it was great to be part of a concert that wasn’t just ‘new music’. In particular I enjoyed hearing works by composers that I had never heard of before, such as the Ginastera pieces for flute. I think in future I would really enjoy having more of my own works performed alongside older works. The Solem Quartet were great to work with, playing everything with incredible skill and commitment. They are also really nice people to work with and open to new ideas and approaches. The amount of rehearsal and workshop time given in order to rehearse and develop my piece was especially appreciated and was essential in allowing me to develop new ideas that I had never tried before.” Above: Dr Lee Tsang, Lecturer in Classical Music Performance, introduces the Solem Quartet, the University of Liverpool’s ‘Quartet in Residence’ 43
