See the Work, Meet the Maker

The Arts are super important to us here at Sonder Magazine along with bringing you practical information. So we decided to use this issue to expand and do an artist showcase on a local Lynchburg, VA artist. Meet Rebekah Hower a local artist and teacher!

Q: So, for those who don’t know you: who are you and what do you do?

A: My name is Rebekah Hower! I am an artist and teacher. I teach middle school art at Liberty Christian Academy. I am also an artist myself. I sell my artwork locally, at the Forest Farmers Market with Belmont Pottery, at the Rivermont Makery, and online at my Etsy store.

Q: Why do you do what you do?

A: I create my art to help encourage myself and my viewers! I strive to create things that are beautiful to look at and hold. I paint and make pottery to make myself happy and hopefully it makes the viewers happy!

Q: How has your practice changed over time?

A: I used to create artwork just for fun. However, it has become a huge part of my life now! I cannot go a week without painting or making some pottery, or even just doodling a little! Since I teach art, my practice has changed also! I am experimenting way more than I used to. I want to show my students that you can do all sorts of artwork and that there is an entire world of creative outlets from which they can choose!

Q: What art do you most identify with? Or Artist?

A: I tend to relate very well with art of the Romantic Period in the 19th century. Artists like John Constable and William Turner create beautiful landscapes and other images that evoke a lot of emotions. I find a lot of my inspiration from nature and landscapes same as these artists.
