FINANCE
It comes at a time , though , when global needs and personal economic pain are clashing head-on .
The Centre ’ s Director , Professor of Accounting and Finance Jia Liu , says there has always been a danger that the cost of making the changes needed to ease pressure on the Earth ’ s resources and natural systems will be borne inequitably by people and communities already struggling . With the current economic crisis , driven primarily by energy shortages , this equity challenge has become even more acute . Professor Liu says the Centre ’ s first step is to look at ways to better integrate financial research into endeavours to improve environmental and social sustainability – in other words , ‘ sustainable finance ’.
Professor Liu joined the University in 2020 specifically to set up CISF , which was officially launched in June 2022 as part of the 11th Financial Engineering and Banking Society International Conference .
Professor Liu says the term ‘ sustainable finance ’ typically refers to companies managing and investing in ways to minimise or eliminate negative environmental impacts : “ for example , efforts to reduce a business ’ s carbon footprint ”.
