Fair death
A 26-year-old Swiss national who lives in Alicante died while attending Málaga ’ s annual fair last month . Police were called at 5.00am when he appeared to be suffering a violent reaction to drugs , a state known as “ agitated delirium ,” and officers found him difficult to control to prevent him harming himself . He was eventually taken to hospital where he died and an investigation opened .
Pilot suicide
A 45-year-old Dutch airline pilot found dead in his car at Málaga airport is believed to have committed suicide . Jouke Schrale , who lived in Mijas , was due to pilot a Ryanair flight to Brussels on August 3 , but his body was discovered in his vehicle parked in the staff car park after he failed to arrive for work . The airline said it was “ very distressed ” at the news .
Artefact thefts
A German tourist has been caught stealing archaeological artefacts from a restricted excavation site in Murcia . He was spotted at the dig in a restricted area in Cartagena by a local councillor who saw him slip several objects into a cold storage box . The suspect has confessed and been charged , while security at the town centre site has been stepped up .
Gang rivalries
Eight people suspected of belonging to two juvenile gangs have been detained in Rincón de la Victoria . They are suspected of involvement in kidnapping , illegal detention , torture , robbery with violence , injuries and privacy violations during confrontations between the two groups . All suspects are local and aged between 16 and 25 years .
Night rescue
An 18-year-old Dutch tourist had to be rescued after trying to swim from La Caleta de Maro beach around the rocky coastline to Nerja ’ s Burriana beach in the dark . Friends raised the alarm and a four-hour search began . He was discovered trapped on a rocky outcrop from where a Maritime Service boat and members of the Guardia Civil sub-aqua team rescued him .
Restaurant gutted
A well-known beach restaurant in Torre del Mar was completely gutted by fire last month . The blaze is thought to have started in a kitchen fryer at the Bere Bere chiringuito on August 9 and spread rapidly throughout the building . Staff were quickly evacuated as gas bottles began to explode but no-one was injured in the incident .

Málaga is base for Hyperloop development

It has been confirmed that a joint Spanish-British venture will open a Hyperloop research and testing centre in the province of Málaga . The joint venture between Spain ’ s rail infrastructure board , ADIF , and Richard Branson ' s Virgin group was confirmed at the start of August .
The Hyperloop is a bullet train able to achieve speeds of up to 1,200 kilometres per hour ( 750 mph ), meaning that it would take less than 60 minutes to cover distances that take around 10 hours by road . A journey from Madrid to Barcelona would last less than half an hour while travelling from Madrid to Valencia would take under 20 minutes .
The new centre is to be based at Bobadilla , 12 kilometres west of Antequera , in ADIF ' s existing test centre for the high-speed AVE services ,

Granada child abduction row continues

A Granada woman has been handed a five year jail term for child abduction after going into hiding with her two sons , now aged 12 and four years . Juana Rivas had accused her estranged Italian husband of abuse and had refused to obey a court order to hand the children into his custody . She has also been ordered to pay him compensation of € 30,000 .
Women ’ s groups and politicians have been critical of the sentence which also removes custody rights for six years and instructs her to pay court costs . She said last year , “ A woman running away from terror to protect her children can ’ t be classed as abduction .”
The case began in 2016 when she removed them from the family home in Italy and brought them to Spain on the pretext of visiting her family in the Granada town of Maracena . However , once on Spanish soil , she alleged domestic abuse and ignored a Spanish and is expected to create up to 250 jobs . Plans include a service from Madrid to Tangiers in Morocco via a tunnel with a journey time of 47 minutes , plus a 90 minute link between Madrid and London .
This opens up possibilities for workers in the future to commute abroad daily with a journey time typically the same as the average drive to the office takes today .
