Extra music dates
Irish Annies bar in c / Almirate Carranza have added a further night to their music scene because of popular demand . Live music will now be available on Wednesday , Thursday and Saturday nights until June .
This is in addition the very popular fun quiz on Monday nights and they will of course also be showing Six Nations rugby matches . See their ad on page 30 . Six Nations food theme .
Nerjamar Christmas appeal
You may have seen Nerjamar ’ s appeal in our last two issues , we asked them how it went ... “ Wow ! Fantastic Response ! So , we were wondering what the reponse might be like this year due to the rising living costs that we are all experiencing but what a response ! In total , with the donations on this GoFundMe page and also the cash donations received , we raised 967 euros for Caritas Nerja and Cruz Roja Nerja ( Red Cross )! well as a huge selection of toys , games , etc . As well as the lovely donations brought to our office , the clients of Donna Monroe ’ s hair salon supported us again this year , with their best-ever collection for the two charities .
So , a huge thank you to everyone for their generosity and support for the people of Nerja . Happy New Year !”
Potters Bar
Potters bar in c / Adalucia , Nerja will be showing all Six Nations rugby matches on multi-screen TVs and offering free themed food during home nations games .
Pie and Mash will be served during England games with Leek and Potato soup for the Wales matches , Mince and Tatties for Scotland and Irish Stew for the Ireland games .
“ We bought bags of non-perishable food items , toiletries , nappies , etc for Caritas Nerja who last year helped over 1,000 families in Nerja . And for Cruz Roja , each child wrote to the Three Kings to request a gift and we were able to buy these items for nearly 30 children , as

Park upgrade
Co-financing from European funds has enabled Nerja to upgrade the El Pinarillo recreational area . Some € 56,000 has gone towards new wooden tables and benches , fences and litter bins . Environment councillor Javier Rodríguez said that the area for sports activities would also be renovated .
Torrox renovation
Work to upgrade a 16th century building in Torrox got under way last month with a € 126,000 budget . Work at the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves includes protecting the roof and improving the coffered ceiling , as well as removing some work done in the 60s and 70s which is not consistent with the monument . Mayor Óscar Medina described the building as , “ one of the most emblematic buildings in the municipality , both for its history and for housing the patron saint of Torrox .”
Green Vélez
Environmentalists have called for lowemission zones to be established in Vélez-Málaga . GENA , Ecologists in action , say towns of more than 50,000 people were obliged to introduce such areas on January 1 to improve air quality and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions . Vélez Town Hall says such zones will be implemented in the centres of Vélez and Torre del Mar before next January .
Ukraine support
The second phase of courses for Málaga ’ s new arrivals from Ukraine are expected to begin this month . In December , 89 people were given support across the province to prepare them for working in Spain . The initiative run by the provincial
government and the Red Cross has a budget of € 120,000 and will continue to offer such help until the end of August .
Metro update
Contracts for the extension to Line 2 of Málaga ’ s Metro as far as the Hospital Civil are expected to be put out to tender this month with a target budget of € 56.65 million . Meanwhile , the imminent opening of Line 1 ’ s 1.8m kilometre extension from El Perchel to Atarazanas into the city centre , has been delayed . Junta president Juanma Moreno said in mid-January that safety tests had taken longer than expected but were “ almost complete .”
New life
Following the death one of the four iconic ficus trees on the Paseo de Andalucía in Vélez-Málaga , its trunk and branches have become an art installation thanks to local artists José Casayamor and Fernando Gil . The tree is now full of life again with their carved animals and birds perched upon it . The new attraction is surrounded by the tree ’ s three surviving “ brothers ,” each believed to be over 100 years old .
