WHY QUALITY? What is the biggest fear that civil engineers have? The biggest fear that civil engineers should have is that someone will be killed or injured on one of their projects due to an error or omission on their part. This could be an incorrect calculation, a mistake on a plan or in a specification, poor judgment, miscommunication, inadequate record retention or any number of things that can occur in the design and construction of complex civil engineering projects as each project is unique so there is no opportunity to develop and test prototypes. Projects are designed by multi-disciplined teams that require excellent communication among them and close coordination of the deliverables, plans and specifications telling the contractor what to build. Producing a high quality design that meets the client’s requirements and design codes is challenging when working to meet a deadline and that is why we implement processes, like Quality Control/Quality Assurance, to ensure that errors and omission are caught before drawings and specifications are issued for construction. So why is everybody so worried about quality? Why do we at SNA need an ISO 9001: 2015 certified Quality Management System? Why must we work according to the system? Because we want to avoid this: - By applying our QMS as a Business Management System, we support the principal objective of SNA to achieve and exceed its Customer’s specified requirements in the course of the delivery of a professional service by means of value engineering, initiative, technical innovation and excellence, as well as the result of leadership, efficient management, professional work and the effective implementation of the Quality Management System. 5
