Central's Regional Managers share their thoughts on the year that was 2013.
PETER HUMPHREYS - SYDNEY
It is probably a good thing that Christmas is now upon us so that we can take a breather and re-group after one of the toughest years in memory for the consulting industry. I am sure that you don’t have to be reminded of this. However, our pipeline is quite healthy and we have some strong opportunities in the major projects area which we are hoping will come to fruition in the near future. The projects which are closest to being awarded are the North-West Rail Package 2 (SVC) with Salini and Impregilo, Foxground to Berry Bypass with Fulton Hogan and Oxley Highway to Kundabung D&C with Thiess. All are very strong teams.
We have responded to the market which has required us to win some smaller projects with some success. The Water Group has started winning work on the Sydney Water Panel with Abergeldie after a long gestation period which also is a symptom of the market. Geotech has won Construction Phase work on the Northern Sydney Freight Corridor at North Strathfield underpass and the group is targeting similar work on other projects. Structures is gaining success winning multiple projects on the “Bridges to the Bush” program and rail continues to win Super Panel work and has come off a very successful delivery of the Gosford Passing Loops project. The transport group has consistently won a number of small projects and have been successful on Warrell Creek to Nambucca Heads site services contract, early works for the NWRL, and we are positioned with Leighton on the M4 widening. Environment has also won the Stage 1a EIS for WestConnex which is a significant win and the Energy group is borrowing resources from other groups to deliver on time. As a result of our marketing efforts, the SMEC brand has become much more widely recognised and we will continue actively marketing in the New Year.
Thank you for your collective efforts throughout the year and I believe that we will have a less stressful and more satisfying 12 months in 2014. Please enjoy the break with your family and friends and I wish you all the best for the season.
