Once again this year (on Tuesday, September 1st) the elementary
(K-6) were bussed down to Grand Island for a fun-filled day at the
State Fair. Their day was packed with numerous shows, exhibits,
and attractions.
They were split into groups- the Kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd
graders were in one group, and the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders were
in the second group.
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd started off their day with team sorting,
where riders on horseback tried to round up cows with certain
numbers into pens with corresponding numbers. After team
sorting, the group watched the elephant show; they got to see the
elephants perform different tricks, including standing up, dancing
to music, and picking up people with their trunks. The students
even got to see how the elephants lay down to go to sleep. Dawson
Skrdla and Jimmy Fletcher got to feed an elephant an apple. After
the elephant show, the group watched a rescued dog Frisbee show.
Lawrence and his assistant Jolie and three dogs: Mars, Flash, and
Galaxy (called the Disc-Connected-K9s) performed tricks. The
dogs would jump in the air and over people to catch the thrown
Frisbee.
Next, the group watched the BMX Bikes as they performed
numerous tricks that Malynn Boyles said “were so, so awesome!”
The group then had a lunch of sandwiches, fresh fruits, and
veggies. After lunch, they attended Melody. When they asked for
volunteers, Caydence Feldman and Kamden Barker volunteered
but sadly were not picked. The students had to the follow the “lead
guy.” The dancing was “fun and really silly,” according to
Topanga Boyles.
The group’s next stop was the Nebraska Building. They saw “a
giant pivot with awesome lights on it,” but the highlight (according
to the students) was that they got milk and cookies. They stopped
off to visit the petting zoo, where they saw a bison, a porcupine, a
tortoise, a longhorn, camels, horses, goats, pigs, kangaroos, and
many other animals. They even got to see a “zedonk” that was,
according to Kegan Richie, “fast, but NOT as fast as a cheetah!”
Ida Gross’s favorite part of the fair was seeing a real-life zebra!
3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students started their day off with the
Nebraska Building.
