Vandalism Tradition Shines Light on
Alumni Experience
By Nam Boonphakdee
Litchfield Public
School’s century long
history has produced a
long line of graduates
over the years. Recently
we were cleaning the
classrooms and empty-
ing out an old desk, and
we came across a particularly interesting drawer
which had signatures of past Litchfield graduates
“vandalized” all over it. We managed to contact three
of the names and interviewed them about what was
life like when they were in school. Here are their sto-
ries:
Jack Fread graduated from Litchfield
in 1958. He stated that he was an old
fashioned farm boy and that he had to
walk one mile through a field to a
friend’s house, before carpooling with
his friends, LaVern Reitz and Billy Ska-
la in an antique 1929
Ford Model A to school,
eight miles away. He
said he did this because at the time,
school buses weren’t introduced yet
(Litchfield’s school bus program started
in 1959).To pay for gas, which was only
19 cents per gallon, he and his friends
hunted jack rabbits and sold the fur to a
dealer in Loup City for 25 cents per white hide and 10
cents per black hide. In school many things were the
same as today. the only significant difference was that
school ended at three pm (unless you did sports). He
ended the interview by saying “It was hard times but a
lot of fun times”.
